Awww, he's a cute little guy

Nothing here. Wife shot a button buck Saturday afternoon, I passed up antler-less Saturday, couldn't get a good shot Sun morning, & then the monsoon came Sun. afternoon, & I was just not that devoted.

No pics of the button buck either Was in a hurry to get him in a cooler before the rain hit hard Sun.

We are finding several in northern MO. So far we have found 18 in the areas we hunt. Found one 13 pointer, 10 pointer, several 8 pointers, some smaller ones, lots of does.
One guy in the area has supposedly found over 60 dead ones.
The deer numbers are definitely down in the areas we hunt.

Hunters are "encouraged" not to take deer out of the CWD containment zone. It is definitely not "prohibited". The details are right there in the 2012 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information Guide that you can pick up for free at most any place that sells deer tags.

^ Wife read it, I honestly never did, so not 100% sure on the wording. Numbers are down this year for sure. Couple that with shitty winds all season, made for some crappy hunting. Saw about half of my normal numbers, & ones I did see were on the move HARD. No necessarily spooked, just not hanging around feeding or anything.

Here's some trail cam pics of the 8 pointer my Dad's been gunning for. First 2 are from earlier this year while he was still in velvet. Night time pic was taken last night so he's made it through the first weekend of hunting. This buck walked in front of my brother at 15 yards broadside but he only had a doe tag. Made him sick. I didn't get to go this year.

A spike, seen a dozen so far, along with several 4 pointers,,,,but where I live and hunt in NY they instituted the 3 point on one side antler restrictions this year,,, NYDEC is planning on instituting that state wide very, very soon, it will be the best thing as the areas already with antler restrictions have seen excellent results. The first year of the restrictions is a bitch because most all the previous years spikes and 4pntrs were harvested the year before.

PA implemented it several years ago and they have had stellar success with stabillizing deer heard ratios and increased the amount of huge bucks substantially.

We have the antler point restriction here in MO too (min. of 4 on one side). The antler point restriction has been in place for 8 years, I think, here in MO. And we have not seen an increase of bigger/nicer antlered deer, in the areas we hunt. We have actually seen a decrease.
The point restriction makes no sense, on increasing the number of bigger bucks. What happens, is over the years a lot of the bigger/nicer racked bucks get shot and what does that leave to breed.....spikes, forks, 6 pointers, bucks with screwed up racks. After a few years, the majority of breeding bucks are ones with small racks (bad genes), ones that can't grow a decent rack (again, bad genes). Granted, there are always gonna be some good gened bucks out there, but the gene pool is getting severly diluted by the shit racked bucks, IMO. I have read/heard, that a buck that has good genes will grow a 6 point+ rack at 18 months.
In the past, we used to shoot some really nice bucks each year (probably 3-5), along with ones with shit/small racks. But now that the shit/small racked bucks are "protected", we have seen an increase of shit/small-racked bucks and a substantial drop in bucks with nice racks (we might get 1 or 2 with nice racks).

The 4 per side is what is causing your issues because as you mentioned the scruff deer are the only ones passing along the genetics, 3 per side has seen far better results where implemented, we can obtain tags to take the scruff deer from the DEC(the officer inspects and takes a DNA sample prior to butchering). Also many older deer, past maturity (senior citizens) usually revert back to being spikes.

Three per side would be better, but you are still gonna have the spikes and forks and the oddball racked deer that won't get killed.....and we seem to see a lot of those, in any given year.
Thing is, when they first implemented this, they said it was so we would get bigger/better bucks. Now they say it is for doe control.

our spikes never stay spikes, they always are bigger the next year pretty much without exception. We never shot any spikes on our property anyways for years and they always were bigger the next year. Most of the hunting clubs near us also voluntarily imposed their own restrictions on spikes, and some 4 pointers if they were small bodied deer. But the herds in the state forest lands were all screwed up, nothing but a couple of large bucks(smart ones) and a bunch of yearlings and a shit load of does.

Ill take out a big spike one that is 2 or 3 years old.. Heard they will kill big bucks with those 2 horns..But most spikes here in southern Ohio always grow up fast seen 2 or 3 year old deer in 150 to 160 good shooter's if ya can keep the poachers from killing and cutting heads off wasting all the meat.. I hate to see that stuff happen

Today was the last day for regular rifle, I pushed a few buck out of their beds, but nothing i could get a shot at, a few stayed where I could have but they were not legal(3 point per side).

Got a chance to play with a huge spike for about an hour, I would let him get just out of sight and hit the doe bleet and he would head right back looking for the doe to service.
