Im on a mad scramble for a damn CV carb (that isnt crazy priced) so I can get rid of this over fueling/rich running POS stocker that Ohm's/Tests out perfect on every circuit the FSM tells you to check. My 11 MPG isnt cutting it and I dont know how many more fumes my brain can handle. But I would like to get out hopefully soon since all the other local trails are shut down.

Steve, anything can be hyped to be more than it is, the news media is a good example of that. No question there are some real challenges, but they usually have a by pass.

jplasse, have you tried a different stock carburetor? Do you have a manual? Too many run good and get decent mileage. I am betting you can get yours to work great. Years ago, I ran Qudrajets (sp) and AFB Carter carburetors. Lots of guys could not make them work. I learned, and they were my preferred carburetor. I bet you could pick up a spare to work on for close to free, in you posted in the Wanted section. Petroworks and others rebuild them, so they gotta work. I wish you were closer, I personally would enjoy the challenge. But, I am not as bright as most, I want to put disc in the rear with an ebrake. I want it to work, without excuses. Do I need to, no. Why will I, simply because I believe I can, and it is a challenge.

This is a mild trail, with good scenery: http://www.norcalttora.com/trails/signal_peak.php

Another: http://www.norcalttora.com/trails/slickrock.php

I have done this trail, how they get a 5 is beyond me. There is only about 100 feet or less that my wife's stone stock Toy would have issues with. That is due to ground clearance. Much easier if going from 88 to 50. From what I understand, it is closed now.

Actually I do have a buddy who has a good condition stock carb that was used to pass smog not too long ago so Id assume I could mess with that to get it running right. Also have a buddy with a 32/36 weber but it seems a good working stocker is better than a weber if going off pavement.

(calling friend with stock carb)

No more stock carb... both buddies only have weber's... damn.

I understand hype but from the pictures and and all the sites i did read that it is pretty hard crawling trail.please keep in mind I have been wheeling one time in my life.I have a very good idea how to pick lines (rc crawling LOL) but there is no ooops when you roll over and toss it back on the wheels.

Steve, I understand. Keep in mind I have no interest in messing me or my Zuki up. I did not reach my age by letting it all hang out. My Zuki will go where I no longer have the balls to take it, even though it has open diffs. Any trail I go on, I reserve the right to say, "This is enough for me, I'm going back." I also expect others to do the same. That is why I suggested only going on part of the Rubicon.

jplasse, my suggestion is to install the carburetor that passed smog, and work on the bad one. Leave the good one alone. I really believe you could make the stock carb work well. The thing is only nuts and bolts, with adjustments. I do not base my skills by those of others, and suggest you do the same. You need only to look around, and you will see what I mean. If you are talking cost, the stock carb, properly setup, will be cheaper. If you talk accomplishment, a properly running stock carb has more bragging rights. From your various post, I think you are up to it.

If you were running a highly modified engine, or had a special application, I probably would not suggest the stock carb. I remember in times past, the first things guys wanted to do was put a Holley carb on their V-8s or Webers on their 4 bangers. With most, it was almost like running a fuel line directly into the intake. Two RPM ranges, wide open or off. The real talented guys could make it idle also. Some carburetors have more areas of adjustment. Typically, the more adjustable, the more efficient over the entire RPM range under different conditions, but also require more skill to tune.

Well the good stock carb has been sold so my buddy no longer has it. Therefore not an option at the moment... only have access to two weber's right now.

Im kind of puzzled at the moment due to following the FSM instructions for testing every circuit, vacuum pot, etc and they all seemed to "check out" in the acceptable ranges stated in the FSM. and in all honesty Im not too interested in putting any money into this stock carb and crossing fingers that it will fix my problem. Im currently on the hunt for a CV carb.

He gave me a really good deal so figured might as well grab it. He knew I was coming! Just got it dropped off at work and got home. Hoping everything unionmine said is true Gonna open it up a little since it hasnt been started and double check everything (buddy bought a cummins and valves werent adjusted, head studs were loose etc.) Dont want any surprises.

And as long as I can talk the old GF into picking it up for me, should have me a CV carb by monday after she vists her sis

We could go up on a Saturday morning, about 45 minutes from me. Go till dark, or we had enough, spend the night on the trail, then head back Sunday.

When you are ready, send me a PM.

I have been looking and reading on the level 4 & 5 trails. Actually there are several of them in this area. It looks like most of them can be ran with the family 4x4, nothing special.

I'll post up when I am ready for adventure.. I picked up the Wells Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel drive Trails book a few months ago. Need to take it and have it splined so it will lay flat.

Got the cat in, the fittings for the power steering in, just need to clean up the hoses, fill the ps system, and I can at least do some testing and burn off the bad gas in the tank.

Leaves just shocks, rest of the exhaust, and some minor details before smog ref time.
